Kambo
There is a Kaxinawá legend that says that the indians of the village were very ill and the Shaman Kampu had tried everything possible to cure them. All medicinal herbs known were used, but none helped his people’s agony.
Kampu then entered the forest and under the effect of Ayahuasca, received the visit of the great God who brought in his hands a frog from which he took a white secretion. He taught Kampu how to apply the secretion. When the Shaman Kampu returned to the tribe and followed the instructions he had received, he was able to cure his Indian brothers.
After Shaman Kampu’s death, his spirit went to live in the frog and the Indians began to use its secretion to remain active and healthy (1)
Sananga
Sananga are very powerful eye drops extracted from the shrub Tabernaemontana undulate. When sanaga is applied to the eyes, it is said by the tribes to have the effect of giving the environment greater texture and dimension, making it easier to spot animals during hunting. Along with enhanced vision, sananga has been known to increase energy and provide pain relief. Sananga can be challenging from creating a powerful burning sensation in the eyes. Sananga can provide a shortcut to a meditative state.
Kambo
Kambo is the secretion of Phyllomedusa Bicolor, a bright green tree frog native to the Amazon basin. Kambo has a range of traditional and potential therapeutic applications, both medical and psycho-spiritual. Commonly described as an 'ordeal medicine', the secretion is known for its powerful emetic or purgative effects. Despite its initial unpleasantness, kambo is widely sought out to revitalize the body and mind. Kambo contains a plethora of bioactive peptides that can exert beneficial effects like preventing diseases or modulating the physiological systems.
Rapé ("ha-pay")
Rapé is a shamanic snuff that has been used by tribes of the Amazon basin for hundreds maybe thousands of years and is essential part of their tribal culture and history. It is blown into the nostrils with a special blowpipe. It is traditionally prepared by ceremonial pounding of wild tobacco with the bark of a variety of medicinal trees. Given the potency of wild tobacco, many tribal cultures believe rapé is a tool in releasing emotional, physical, and spiritual illnesses that eases negativity and confusion, enabling a thorough grounding of the mind.
The science of Kambo
The Italian pharmacologist and Nobel prize nominated chemist Vittorio Erspamer was the first person to analyze kambo in a laboratory. He is known for his identification and pharmacological study of over sixty chemical compounds, including octopamine and serotonin. He reported that kambo secretion contained “a fantastic chemical cocktail with potential medical applications, unequalled by any other amphibian”. The “fantastic chemical cocktail” he referred to was peptides. Peptides are short chains of amino acid monomers linked by peptide bonds. Peptides send signals to your cells to function properly. Kambo contains bioactive, meaning they have the ability to bind to cell receptors in humans without difficulty and perform specific, beneficial functions within the body. The benefits of these peptides are far-reaching. In fact, several of them have been isolated and synthesized by the pharmaceutical industry. Some of the peptides found in Kambo include: Phyllomedusin Produces contractions at the smooth muscle level and increases secretions of the entire gastrointestinal tract such as the salivary glands, stomach, small and large intestine, pancreas and gallbladder. These are the main parts responsible for the deep purge produced by the administration of Kambo. Phyllokinin & Phyllomedusins Both are potent vasodilators, increasing the permeability of the blood-brain barrier both for their own access as well as for that of other active peptides. Within this family are the medusins, which also have antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Caeruleins and Sauvagines These are peptides with chains of 40 amino acids with myotropic properties on the smooth muscles, producing a contraction of the colon and urinary bladder. They produce a drop in blood pressure accompanied by tachycaridia. They stimulate the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland, contributing to greater sensory perception and increased resistance. Both peptides possess a great analgesic power, contributing to the increase of physical strength, the capacity to confront physical pain, stress, disease and diminish the symptoms of fatigue. In the medical field, this family of peptides contributes to improved digestion, and aids against pain in renal colic, pain due to peripheral vascular insufficiency and tumor pain. Dermorphin & Deltorphin These are small peptides composed of 7 amino acids. They are selective agonists of the opiate delta receptors, 4000 times more potent than morphine and 40 times more than the endogenous endorphins. Adenoregulins Discovered in the 90’s by John Daly’s team at the National Institute of Health in the USA. Adenoregulin works on the human body through all human cellular fuel. These receptors may offer a target for the treatment of depression, stroke and cognitive loss diseases, such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons. Antimicrobial Peptides Dermaseptins Has powerful antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeast, fungi, protozoa, and enveloped viruses that often cause severe opportunistic infections, particularly those accompanying use of immunosuppressive agents. Several years of research carried out at the University of Paris have shown that peptides Dermaseptin B2 and B3 are effective in killing certain types of cancer cells. Research at Queen's University in Belfast recently won a prestigious award for his groundbreaking work with cancer and Kambo. Its action mechanism is produced by inhibiting the angiogenesis of tumor cells, with selective cytotoxicity for these cells. Bradykinins Bradykinins are a group of peptides that play a role in several physiological processes, particularly in the cardiovascular and inflammatory systems. They regulate blood pressure, inflammation and pain. Particularly, they cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to increased blood flow. They enhance permeability of blood vessels, allowing fluid and proteins to move from the bloodstream to the surrounding tissues. Bradykinins are also involved in the sensation of pain by sensitizing nerve endings, and contribute to the inflammatory response by promoting the release of inflammatory regulators. Bombesins Bombesins are peptides that have various physiological effects in the body. Bombesin is a neuropeptide that acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, particularly in the brain. It plays a role in the regulation of various physiological processes, including the release of hormones. Bombesin has been found to influence gastrointestinal functions, including the release of gastric acid and pancreatic enzymes; it can modulate the digestive processes in the stomach and pancreas. Some studies suggest that bombesin may be involved in the regulation of appetite and food intake. It has been explored for its potential role in controlling obesity and related metabolic disorders. Additionally, bombesin analogs have been investigated for their potential use in cancer therapy. These analogs may be used in targeted therapies to deliver anticancer agents directly to tumor cells expressing bombesin receptors. Ceruleans Ceruleans stimulate gastric, bile, and pancreatic secretions. They can be used in the paralytic ileus (a medical condition characterized by a lack of movement of the muscles in the GI tract, which leads to a disruption in the normal flow of contents through the digestive system). Paralytic ileus can occur in any part of the GI tract, including the small intestine and the colon. Ceruleans is also a diagnostic medium in pancreatic dysfunction. Tryptophilins This peptide has been found to be highly potent against the yeast candida albicans, and is being researched for cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory and anticancer therapy.
How can Kambo help me?
Traditionally, Kambo has been utilized for its potential to enhance physical strength and mental acuity, promote health restoration, bolster immunity, and alleviate negative energies known as "Panema." Its applications and benefits vary among different tribes, which continue to utilize Kambo for these purposes to this day. Kambo is recognized as a profoundly transformative aid that can increase feelings of compassion, courage, emotional resilience, and personal empowerment. Many individuals report feeling more grounded and present in their bodies after Kambo sessions, with reductions in feelings of frustration, anger, and anxiety. These positive effects may persist for varying durations, depending on the individual and the application process. Additional perceived benefits of Kambo include heightened alertness, improved mood, increased resistance to fatigue, hunger, and thirst, enhanced concentration and focus, and the ability to maintain a calm and clear mind. Some individuals have also reported longer-term improvements such as strengthened immune systems, alleviation of chronic fatigue, lowered blood pressure, and overall enhancement of health and well-being. Notably, Kambo has powerful analgesic properties that may provide pain relief up to 40 times more potent than morphine, but without the addictive euphoria associated with opioids. Individuals dealing with autoimmune conditions like Lyme disease have described transformative relief and rejuvenation following Kambo treatments. Kambo interacts uniquely with each person, so it is essential to allow one's individual experience to unfold without expectation based solely on others' experiences. While Kambo can be a supportive health tool, it is not a universal remedy, and personal responsibility for health and well-being remains paramount. *Achieving desired health outcomes often requires dedication and effort beyond any single treatment or practice. Although individual peptides within Kambo secretion have been extensively studied, research on the complete, natural form of Kambo is lacking. Therefore, no medical claims are made regarding its benefits. As interest in Kambo grows, efforts are underway to conduct scientific studies that could substantiate the anecdotal evidence from thousands of users worldwide.
The harvesting
The International Union for Conservation (IUCN) endangered species database lists them in the “Least Concern” category, in view of their current wide distribution and large population. Harvesting frogs is done safely and ethically in a way that honors the connection of humans and nature. The organization I work with, called Tribal Detox, works with the Cocama tribe in Peru. Frogs are harvested during rainy season, when the frogs are more active. While collaborating with the Cocama, we have access to over 100,000 frogs in over 80 miles of jungle landscape. Frogs are gently captured and brought back to the village to harvest the Kambo. Here, they undergo a two-minute process, where their four legs are spread apart in order to scrape the kambo secretion off its back. The kambo is placed on a stick and dried out for later use. The frog is then released safely back to its original habitat. We never go to the same spot more than once in a three-month period and we always leave enough secretion on the frog to protect itself. Tribal Detox practices reflect a deep reverence for the Cocoma and ecological stewardship with the Amazon and the frogs. Tribal Detox members participate in donation campaigns throughout the year for the Cocoma and have annual opportunities to visit the Cocoma tribes and create a deeper relationship with them and the frogs. Transparency of this process is important. Always ask your practitioner if they know where their Kambo is from and if it has been sourced ethically.
What does a Kambo session look like?
After completing the waiver and scheduling your session, the day has arrived. You must have fasted for at least seven hours and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Upon arrival, we'll discuss the origins of Kambo, set intentions for your session, and determine the number of points to be applied. I will offer Sananga to assist you in dropping into your body and into a meditative state before serving you Kambo. Kambo is applied by creating an access point or “gate” on the skin. We do this through creating minor blister points on the skin. This is done quickly and precisely. Depending on intentions for the session, people sitting with Kambo for the first time tend to open 2-5 gates. Gates are traditionally opened on the left arm or right ankle, but can also be administered on the spine or other areas. Once the gates are open, you'll drink 3/4 liter of water while the Kambo is prepared. Then the Kambo is administered onto the open gates. We'll begin with a test-point and wait five minutes to gauge your initial response. After this period, we'll assess and apply the remaining points. You may quickly experience what's known as the “kambo flu.” You'll feel Kambo scanning your body, accompanied by a subtle, pleasant internal warmth. Facial flushing, a mild pounding sensation in the head, accelerated heart rate, fluctuations in body temperature, sweating, and tingling in the hands or feet are common sensations. Throughout the process, there may be a natural urge to purge, often alleviated by the water consumed earlier. Kambo remains on for only 20 minutes to allow absorption of the peptides. Once wiped off, symptoms typically dissipate swiftly, leaving you with a cleansing and euphoric sensation. You'll rest for at least 30 minutes, with continuous support provided throughout your journey. Kambo is non psychoactive so you will be totally present after treatment. After resting, you can resume your day as usual, though it's recommended to prioritize self-care due to potential heightened sensitivity. Many report feeling uplifted, clear, healthier, stronger, and more energized, often resembling their true selves for days or weeks post-session. Rapè will be offered afterward to ground and complete the session.
